Flying Abu Dhabi to the US just got a lot smoother. As of mid-May 2026, a full US pre-clearance facility is live at Zayed International Airport — meaning you can clear American immigration before you even board. If the US is on your travel map, this is genuinely good news.

What's new

Airport runway at night
Zayed International Airport now clears US travellers before departure.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fully moved into a purpose-built pre-clearance facility at Zayed International Airport (map) on 18 May 2026. It's the only facility of its kind across the Middle East and Asia.

Why it's a big deal

Aircraft on the runway
Land in the US as a domestic passenger.

You complete every step of US immigration, customs and agriculture inspection in Abu Dhabi, before boarding. When you land in the US, you're treated as a domestic passenger — so you skip the arrivals queues and make tight onward connections far more easily. All Etihad flights to the US now pre-clear in Abu Dhabi, using biometric tech to speed things up.

How it works (timings)

Dubai and Abu Dhabi travel
Build in a little extra time at the airport.

Plan ahead: check in at Terminal A at least four hours before departure, then reach the CBP pre-clearance facility two hours before your flight — or 90 minutes if you're flying Business, First or The Residence.

Land in New York and walk straight out like a local — that's the new Abu Dhabi advantage.

Angel's quick tips

  • Arrive early — 4 hours for check-in, 2 hours for pre-clearance

  • Business/First/The Residence — 90 minutes is enough

  • Have your documents ready before you reach the CBP hall

  • Applies to US-bound flights from Terminal A
