The story of Downtown Dubai began officially in January 2004 when heavy machinery moved onto the site to commence ground excavation. Engine engineers faced the unprecedented challenge of stabilizing a structure that would rise nearly a kilometer into the sky, sitting atop Dubai's coastal soil geology.

To anchor the tower, construction crews poured over 45,000 cubic meters of high-density concrete reinforced with steel to create a massive 3.7-meter-thick concrete mat.
