Dubai Schools Summer Break 2026: Official Dates, Islamic New Year Holiday & Back-to-School Guide

The last week of school always carries a particular energy in Dubai — the air conditioning working overtime, WhatsApp groups buzzing with end-of-year party plans, and that unmistakable electric anticipation from every child counting down the minutes to summer. If you have school-age children in the UAE and need a clear, no-confusion breakdown of exactly when schools close, what the Islamic New Year means for the school calendar, and when it all starts again — I have every date you need right here.

When Do Dubai Schools Close for Summer 2026?

The vast majority of KHDA-regulated private schools in Dubai will close for summer on Friday, 3 July 2026 — the official last day of the 2025-26 academic year. That is the day your child collects their end-of-year report and walks out into eight weeks of Dubai summer freedom.

A small number of schools with specific curriculum frameworks may finish a day or two earlier or later, but July 3 is the KHDA anchor date. Parents can confirm their school's exact last day through the KHDA Education Directory — every registered Dubai private school has its full calendar published there. The KHDA offices on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai are also available for parents with specific queries. Many schools issue staggered last days for different year groups — always double-check via your school's parent portal or app.

The Islamic New Year Mini-Break — Schools Get It Too

Before summer officially begins, there is one more official holiday: the Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year), marking the start of Muharram 1, 1448 AH. The UAE government confirmed the Hijri New Year public holiday as Monday, 15 June 2026 — applying to both the public and private sectors, including all schools. The announcement was confirmed this week by The National and Khaleej Times.

Since June 15 falls on a Monday, families get a three-day long weekend: Saturday 13 June, Sunday 14 June, and Monday 15 June. It is a quieter, reflective holiday — not the fireworks of Eid — but a genuine school-free day that gives everyone one last breather before the final run-in to summer. For the full public holiday picture see our UAE public holidays 2026 guide and our dedicated Islamic New Year 2026 UAE post.

KHDA (Dubai) vs ADEK (Abu Dhabi) — Do the Dates Differ?

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which sets and publishes the official academic calendar for the emirate. Abu Dhabi's schools — both public and private — fall under the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). Both authorities have broadly aligned their 2025-26 calendars, so the July 3 last day and the June 15 Islamic New Year holiday apply across the UAE.

Small variations do exist. Certain Abu Dhabi schools run slightly different phased timetables, and some international curriculum schools (British, IB, American, Indian) have flexibility to shift dates by a few days within the approved framework. The golden rule: always confirm with your child's school directly via their parent portal — particularly for transitioning or graduating year groups where staggered last days are common.

When Do Schools Go Back? The 2026-27 Start Date

The confirmed first day of the 2026-27 academic year for Dubai private schools is Monday, 31 August 2026. That gives most families approximately eight weeks of summer — from Saturday 4 July through to Sunday 30 August 2026. New students and younger year groups at many schools have a phased start in the first week.

Here are the key dates for the full 2026-27 school year, confirmed by KHDA and reported by Which School Advisor UAE:

  • First day of 2026-27: Monday, 31 August 2026

  • October Half Term: 12–18 October 2026 (some schools: 19–23 October)

  • Winter Break: 14 December 2026 – 3 January 2027

  • Spring Break: 5–11 April 2027

  • Last day of 2026-27: Friday, 2 July 2027

What Can Dubai Families Do During the Long Summer Break?

Eight weeks of summer in Dubai — and July and August temperatures regularly hit 42–46°C, so anything outdoors really belongs to the evenings. But the city absolutely delivers on indoor family entertainment. Malls, cinemas, indoor play zones, aquariums, and waterparks are the backbone of the Dubai summer season.

I have put together the definitive school holiday activities guide for Dubai families in 2026 — covering everything from free children's events to the best waterparks and indoor play zones. The Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) 2026 programme runs all summer with dining deals, retail events, and dedicated family shows — book early, because popular family performances sell out quickly. For families with teenagers, my guide to fun things to do with teens in Dubai this summer is a must-read before July.

For a free, air-conditioned summer activity, the Dubai Mallathon 2026 runs for three months from July and costs nothing. For waterparks, Wild Wadi Waterpark, Aquaventure at Atlantis, and Laguna Waterpark are all excellent bets — booking online in advance secures the best prices.

"My honest advice to every Dubai parent heading into their first long school summer: resist the urge to plan every single day. July genuinely slows the city down — restaurants run deals, spas have their best offers of the year, and the malls feel calmer. Lean into the air-conditioned lifestyle, let the kids have some unstructured mornings, and save the big outings for evenings when Dubai's outdoor spaces transform. Some of my favourite Dubai summer memories happened completely spontaneously — after 7pm."
